Don't Mess with Gen Robinson Film Treatment

December 2018

This teen dramedy treatment for a feature film was written as my final for my Writing for TV and Cinema class using Final Draft. The goal of the assignment was to write, roughly, the first 15 pages of the film up to the inciting incident.

In this story, the main character, Gen Robinson, deals with a cruel, overbearing father while also grappling with the fear of losing her two best friends, who act as her support group, as the friends fall in love with each other. Gen must figure out how to manage her home life and find a way to overcome it, while remembering to not lose her kindness and spirit in the process.

For this particular excerpt, Gen's character, her friends, and their world is established as they go about a regular day at high school, leading up to the inciting incident of her friends asking her how life has been recently at home. The first 15 minutes of the film would maintain a primarily light attitude, with hints of the darker troubles underneath.

Short Film Script

October 2018

This short film was written for an assignment for my Writing for TV and Cinema class using Final Draft. The goal of the assignment was to write a short film of any genre in 5 pages or less.

This short film script was inspired by my friend, Justin Peters, who was a postal worker at the time. He told me of a time in which he encountered a house with a "Beware of Dog" sign, but the dog itself turned out to be very friendly when it toppled him over.

In this comedic script, a postal worker tries to deliver a package to a house, but is scared of a tiny dog that lives at the house. Throughout the short, he comes up with zany ways to try to reach his goal of getting the package to the front of the housing, such as constructing a catapult. Inspired by a true story, but made incredibly over the top, this short was a lot of fun to write and would be a fun film to actually produce one day in the future.

Theia Pilot S1E1

"Over the Rainbow"

July 2018

This script, written in Microsoft Word before I bought Final Draft, was written as a pilot for a sequel audio series to Holly, another podcast show I had produced about a year prior. This script, along with 11 other episodes, were written but never produced.

While this episode takes a light, banter-laden tone, much like Holly does, it was written this way to help the sequel series gradually sever its tied to the parent podcast, while hoping to still draw in the same audience. This episode is part one of a three part pilot. The final two parts of the pilot help the show take on a darker, more action-adventure like tone with the cliffhanger of episode one.

In this particular episode, Johan, a main character of the sequel spin-off attempts to win back a girl he cheated on during Holly by using fast "walk and talk" like banter replete with pop culture references.

This episode also sets up a main theme of the series, being redemption in the eyes of those you love. For Johan, it is showing that he is worthy of being a man that his love interest, Weston, can love. For others, it is proving their worth as a leader, or as a part of a family.

YouTube Study

Fall 2019 Ed. Elon Journal

July 2019

In the spring of 2019, I began taking a class entitled Great Ideas: Issues and Research. The objective of this class was to write a research paper around something in communications and media. At the end of the class, the professor helped students submit to Elon University's undergraduate research journal, the Elon Journal, in hopes of publishing work.

My study centered around understanding the multibillion dollar industry that is video game livestreaming. Specifically, I used content analysis to code streamers' banners on YouTube to understand what genres they were presenting on their banner, what colors they were using, which rhetorical appeals, and much more.

Initial finding were quite exciting, indicating that there seems to be a pattern in branding that leads to success on YouTube, especially in terms of color usage and genres.

My paper was accepted for publication into the Elon Journal. Excitingly, the final version of the paper, pictured on the site, is also available to be read in the Fall 2019 issue of the journal.

Will Willimon Short Film Research for Susie Films

July 2019

Throughout my time at Susie Films, I conducted a lot of research for potential show and short film ideas. One of the projects I am allowed to share I worked on in my portfolio is a short film based around Will Willimon's childhood.

For this short film, much of the action was to take place in a school and rural town in South Carolina. The entire document available for download showcases the research I conducted to find schools in the local area for filming, houses in the local area for another scene, a nearby shop that could be used for costumes, and much more.

While occasionally interns are asked to add to the same project, this is a research task I did entirely on my own. The only comments that are not mine are in the pink color text on the document, which are comments and suggestions from one of Susie Film's production assistants asking me for additional information or choosing locations from what I found in the area.

This research gave me great insight into what it takes in pre-production to put a film together before the camera even begins rolling.
